Steve's Espresso
Best of Phoenix

Sometimes, the rest of you forget that Tempe actually extends south of University Drive, beyond Arizona State University and into suburbia. It's there that we find Steve's Espresso, across the street from Target, around the corner from Ace Hardware and next door to a pretty good Indian restaurant. We love Steve's because the crowd's a bit calmer than what we see along Mill Avenue, and there's actually a place to park, right in front. Inside on a Sunday morning at the end of summer, electronic music plays in the background, just enough of a beat to keep us going as we wait for a latte. When we order a bagel, expecting full service, we're crushed when the guy behind the counter asks, "One packet of cream cheese or two?" but we perk up when we realize we get to toast our own bagel (the kids at Einstein's never get it dark enough, and don't get us started on Bruegger's), and soon we're bobbing our heads again, soaking in the local art on the walls, the leather chairs, the wireless access. And the latte's not bad at all. Bagel's pretty good, too. And there are even free dog biscuits for the hairy type hanging outside with his owner.

Pat Tillman's friends and family created Pat's Run as a way to celebrate Pat's passionate legacy while raising awareness and funding for the Pat Tillman Foundation. Perry Edinger, Pat's friend and former head trainer for Arizona State University, initiated and developed the concept of a 4.2 mile run/walk around Arizona State with a finish on the 42-yard line of Sun Devil Stadium (#42 was Pat's number while a Sun Devil). Perry wanted the event to be something physical, outdoors, and open to all saying, "With Pat's Run, people are motivated to exercise and do something positive for themselves, while honoring Pat's memory, sharing their stories and ultimately being an inspiration to others." More than 8,000 spectators will cheer you on as you race your home-made cardboard boat on a 200-yard course on Tempe Town Lake! Every boat is unique – from the design to the costumes to the ability to stay afloat!
Located on Mill Avenue in Tempe, Arizona, Monti's La Casa Vieja provides an unforgettable setting for any occasion. Steeped in a tradition of Southwestern hospitality that dates back more than 130 years, the popular restaurant makes its home in an authentic adobe hacienda that's an icon of Arizona history Harry Mitchell is a native Arizonan and an exemplary public servant. Harry was first elected to the Tempe City Council in 1970 and was elected mayor of Tempe in 1978, where he served his community and fellow citizens for 16 years. As Tempe's mayor, he spearheaded the effort to revive and revitalize Tempe's dying downtown area -- an area that is now one of the Valley's most successful business and entertainment centers. In leading this remarkable urban rebirth, he built partnerships of small business owners, neighborhood groups, corporations, investors and the leadership of Arizona State University; partnerships that worked cooperatively toward common, and positive, goals.
Rio Salado Rowing Club was founded to provide a quality rowing opportunity to the valley’s growing rowing community. Though founded in 1991, the club’s programs launched in 2000, shortly after Tempe Town Lake was opened to the public in November 1999. Splash Playground at Tempe Beach Park lets children cool off and have fun at Tempe Town Lake. The one-acre playground teaches how a drop of rain falls from the sky and ends up either in the ocean or becomes part of the city water supply. The Great Arizona Beer Festival March 18 & 19 2006 - at Tempe Town Lake, 54 W Rio Salado, Tempe, AZ 85281 - 2pm to 6pm More than 200 teams from around the country applied for the chance to launch into aviation history as a part of Red Bull Flugtag Arizona. After carefully reviewing the applications, 33 outstanding teams were selected to soar or swan dive into the Tempe Town Lake on April 29, 2006. “Flugtag” means “flying day” in German, but don't expect to see anything resembling a plane on the flight deck - instead the skies above Tempe will be filled with a flying toilet, a trailer home, a giant taco, a flying fish and a Shaggin’ Waggin’...anyone remember Dumb & Dumber? That’s what we’re talking about people.
